Make a $400 Suit Look Like $4000

Every March, my girlfriend bounds into the living room, half-opened RSVP card in her hand with that "look" on her face. All men know that look. Translated, it means "Will you travel to another state on a Saturday this summer and stand in the hot sun surrounded my all of my friends? Do you mind holding my purse and having the same three conversations over and over again?" There's only one thing you can say to that look: "What days do I need to take off work?"

As the ancient Spartans marched into battle outnumbered by over a million, across the country men walk into summer weddings unprepared and overwhelmed. As a man it's not your responsibility to stand out at a wedding, but conform to your date's needs. Usually that need is standing next to her and looking good. The standing next to her part is easy, but it's the latter we struggle with.

While we wish we could dress as sharp as the men on the cover of GQ, most of the time our bank accounts have already been depleted with the plane tickets, hotel and rental car you'll inevitably have to purchase for this summer weekend (isn't it her friend getting married?). Here are a few affordable tips to help your suit look above your pay grade:

1. Shop for your body type. Slim-cut jackets are always the way to go for the tall and lanky. When trying on a jacket, hold your hands out in front of you, the sleeves should touch right above your wrists.

2. Avoid synthetic materials or bold choices like a bow tie or top hat. There are only three men who can pull those off and their last names are Mars, 3000 and Timberlake. The last time I checked, they're multi-million dollar recording artists and you flew Southwest Airlines to this gala.

3. Spend the money on a professional tailor. A jacket and pants that are cut to your body are all the difference between looking like James Bond or an eighth grader in the daylight of puberty.

Follow these steps and you'll have your date turning twice as many heads with you on her arm. Now navigate your way towards that open bar, pronto.
